Many close links were formed during the war, especially by the Anzacs who were billeted with Brightlingsea people during the winter months. The Victorian hobby of having friends and family sign a Friendship Book, what we now know as an autograph book, led to very attractive and often intricate cartoons, paintings and verses hand-written by their ‘sunburnt colonial’ lodgers.
Here you see only a tiny sample of more than eighty drawings and messages contained in original Friendship Books donated to Brightlingsea Museum.
